- Go to contacts.google.com — the Contacts upload path keeps the animation; the Gmail settings page often converts it to a static image.
- Click your profile picture (top right) → the camera icon → Change.
- Upload the downloaded GIF and keep the crop covering the full square.
- Save. It can take a few minutes to propagate everywhere.
The animation plays in expanded emails and Google Chat. The inbox list and non-Google mail apps show only frame 1 — which is why the frame-1 preview above matters.
